Khan Of Finland - Khan Of Finland (2009)
17.2.09
Khan Of Finland are the touring band fronted by producer and vocalist Can 'Khan' Oral - the Tomlab solo artist and member of Captain Comatose. This album features interpretations of songs from Khan's solo career like 'Who Never Rests' and 'You Like To Party', all configured around this most unusual of trio setups, one which depends upon a backdrop supplied by human beatboxer Mark Boombastik and classically-trained, Frankfurt-based pianist Boris Bergman. The results are predictably weird, though by no means unsuccessful, andf the inherent silliness of the setup never prevents 'Favor After Favor' from achieving a certain amount of earnest momentum. Apparently, these nine songs were recorded live at a derelict petrol station, with only a few overdubs (also recorded at peculiar locations) added afterwards to flesh out the sound. Khan's sound never ceases to bewilder, whether it be on the crooned lounge-funk of 'Excommunication' or the rather splendid Beethoven-aping piano vs. vocal percussion of album climax 'Vier Jahreszeiten', and this record proves to be a fine advert for the Khan Of Finland live show.
