Lily Allen - It's Not Me, It's You (2009)

Allen sets about the unacceptable face of celebrity from the off.'Everyone's At It' barely suppresses a yawn condemning the ubiquity of drugs in our culture, all set to a suitably addictive synthetic pop tune, although "The kids are in danger" is hardly the most insightful lyric on the subject.

More agreeably potty-mouthed is lead single 'The Fear', where her observations at least smack of honesty without displaying any great degree of perception. It is all co-written and produced by Greg Kurstin, the man who has sprinkled magic studio dust over the work of Britney Spears, Kylie Minogue and All Saints.

Their best moments are the gentle techno hoedown of 'Not Fair', and the pseudo-handbag house of 'Back To The Start', with Lily's talent for motor-mouthing Cockney clicking through the gears. The cheesy chanson of 'Never Gonna Happen' is a confusing blend of musical ingredients, marginally more successful than 'Him', the God rant apparently brewing since she left Catholic school. It's a pretty little pop ditty entirely bereft of the simplest theological theory.
