Marina And The Diamonds - The Crown Jewels EP (2009)

Marina and the Diamonds is back with another release on Neon Gold, The Crown Jewels EP. “Seventeen” isn’t quite as big as “Obsessions,” but it’s an interesting direction. And further proof that Marina’s voice and songwriting is a force. Look forward to hearing the rest of the EP — promise of a Starsmith remix on the digital release has me salivating.

If Little Boots and La Roux represent opposite ends of a spectrum then Marina & The Diamonds falls somewhere safely in the middle. There’s a quirkiness that Marina shares with La Roux but relaxes on some serious songwriting akin to Little Boots — all three share some solid pop sensibilities. Yeah, comparing apples and oranges and pears but the triad represents a new wave of women singer/songwriters that is refreshing and strong and wonderful. And all three craft songs that will be stuck on repeat for the next twelve months, at least. (From BIGSTEREO)
