Mr Scruff & Roots Manuva - Nice Up The Function (2009)
9.4.09
“Unify before we die like dogs/ All we need is just some chips and cod/ So fly your flag now, show me your mix/ Everybody everybody, immigrants and rejects.”
Scruff and the Cruffatin have a history going right back to the Southportian’s "Keep It Unreal" album in 1999 and their collaborations are always a highlight of his albums. “Nice Up The Function,” taken from “Ninja Tuna,” was no exception. Mr Manuva took the time to drop just about the most conscious party lyrics you could hope for, turning getting twatted and dancing like a loon into an act of political resistance, Scruff hooking up a pulsing piece of digi-dubhall.
Now the Scruffster has remodelled the beat for an epic remix of squirt, squelch and parp and Roots rides high again. Throw in instrumentals, the original and fellow UK crew Broke ‘n’ English on “Bonus Bait” track “Listen Up!” and you have the making of a monstrous single with enough wobble and slurp for any self-respecting wazaudiophile.
